Homemade Dry Shampoo That Helps Protect Your Head

Our hair goes through a beating these days - whether it's being washed and stripped of all oils every day or the exposure to high heat when using styling tools (even as simple as a blow dryer), dry shampoo allows you to keep your hair healthier for longer. Homemade dry shampoo allows you to control what you're putting on your body and save some money in the process!

Why Use Dry Shampoo

While washing your hair is necessary for basic hygiene, the idea that hair must be washed every day in order to be clean is harming your health.

The natural oils in your hair act as a protective layer on the scalp and washing away these oils on a daily basis leaves the skin more vulnerable to absorbing toxins, dries the scalp, and leaves your hair brittle and stripped. On the other hand, the more you wash your hair, the more oil your scalp produces to make up for the lack of oil.

To begin breaking the stripping cycle and to stay fresh between washes, dry shampoo absorbs excess moisture (i.e. oil) and volumizes hair (which tends to flatten when weighed down with oils). Additionally, unwanted scalp visitors are more likely to stay away due to the drying properties of the ingredients, application directly onto the scalp, and properties of essential oils used.

Why Homemade Dry Shampoo

Besides needing a dry shampoo when a bottle of it runs out, all-natural homemade dry shampoo allows you to control the ingredients applied to your scalp and save money in the process.

While the average bottle of dry shampoo costs about $15, homemade dry shampoo usually costs around 1/3 of the price for more product.

Make Your Own Dry Shampoo

Let's get to it - how do you make your own dry shampoo? You can follow along with the video and find the recipe below!

Ingredients + Tools:

  • Small container (like a 4oz mason jar)
  • Arrowroot starch (about 1 cup)
  • 5 drops of green mandarin or Citrus Bloom essential oil blend
  • 5 drops melaleuca (tea tree) essential oil
  • 2 drops rosemary essential oil

Add the arrowroot starch until the jar is nearly full and add all the drops of essential oil into the jar, close the lid and shake. Apply the dry shampoo to your scalp using your fingers or a big kabuki brush.
