Natural Egg Dye - Creating Earth Paints

Once upon a time, there was a mama who loved the earth so much so that her dream was to have a fun 'holiday craft time' with her children that involved 'non-toxic', earth-friendly, Easter egg dyes, which are vibrant, risk-free, safe and 100% natural. If you are a parent that enjoys the 'crafting world' and you are looking for ways to enjoy your kids' craft times, knowing the products you are using are all safe, then you are at the right place.

Reports show that Children younger than 6 years were half of the poison exposures (46.4%) in 2016, followed by adults (39.0%), then teens (7.7%).  Replacing toxins in our homes is one of the fastest ways we can create more vibrant and safe spaces for everyone.  This Easter, I was inspired by our ancient ancestors on this blue moon to create some “earth paint” to celebrate Earth Day on April 22.  These are made from herbs, appearing in all of your favorite colors.

Add essential oils to each color and let your creativity bloom naturally. The options are endless and so much fun for the sensory palate!

As a mom who dared to dream and say yes…I joined thousands of parents who were looking for another alternative that would lower dangerous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and petroleum products in our home.  According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), concentrations of many VOCs are consistently higher indoors (up to ten times higher) than outdoors. In addition to reducing what we put on our skin, walls, and into our clothes, we opted to use essential oils daily.

We now have healthier choices when we're on the go, new flavors for our food, and aromas to support our bodies and homes, which is far different from our earlier days when we started our family 21 years ago.  Believe me, when I say that cleaning things up was simple, I just needed to know what to use.

How did I learn? I searched it on the internet.  Truth, I did not have a book 9-years ago when I started using doTERRA and when I did… it was scary.

Before that, I simply took what the health food people told me to be true and used lavender and eucalyptus.  The book I received in 2009 was so full of crazy ideas, I could not touch it; not super simple. If I had not been so determined to find a different way, I would have given up.  When I set out on this journey to parent 'chemical free' and get rid of expiration dates, I looked to the world of medicinal grade essential oils. They truly are 1,000 remedies in your pocket that can go with you anywhere you go and allow you, as a parent, the tools to be the first defense for your family.  I do love the earth and the earth loves me.  You do too, or you wouldn't be reading this article.  So come on, I will walk you down the path of simple solutions that will aid you in your home to clean things up, chuck the bleach and reach for earth’s simple solutions.

Let’s start with dyes this Easter weekend.

I use these same herbs for watercolors, for frosting, food coloring, playdough and yes…. Easter egg dye. My favorite part is that each color has a vibrant, calming smell to it.

Are you ready?  Let’s create something special.  Here are the herbs you will need and the essential oils you can use with them for their aromatherapy effect.                                 You can use empty baby food or jam jars, even essential oil bottles if you like, to store your paints in afterward.  It’s loads of fun!

Ingredients needed - Ground Herbs & Essential Oils:

  • Beet Root Powder: Red (Cassia, Cinnamon Bark, Holiday Joy®* or OnGuard®*)
  • Turmeric Powder: Orange (Wild Orange, Tangerine, Mandarin or Cumquat)
  • Ground Mustard Seed: Light Yellow (Elevation®*, Lemon or Citrus Sunshine®*)
  • Skullcap Herb: Light Green (Lime, Citrus Sunshine®*, Forgive®* or Aspire®*)
  • Spirulina: Dark Green (Peppermint, Blue Tansy- this will add more blue to the color, or Motivate®*)
  • Bilberry Fruit: Purple (Lavender, Patchouli, or Serenity®*,)
  • Black Walnut: Gray (Arborvitae, Juniper Berry, Peace®* or  Balance®)

*All proprietary blends from doTERRA International
Note: You could also use an egg white or water instead of vegetable glycerin. However, if you use water or an egg white, the shelf life is only a day. The shelf life with vegetable glycerin is six months.

Directions:
  1. Combine powdered herb, clay, and vegetable glycerin in a small bowl; mix well.
  2. Add essential oil and stir.
  3. Store in an airtight container
Tips and Tricks: Dip your paintbrush in water for a lighter color and quicker dry time. Using paint without water will deliver vibrant results; however, it may take a while to dry.
