How Feeling Your Fear Is the Only Way Through It

I'm sitting in my kitchen today, looking at the way this house is put together. It's solid. It has a foundation that doesn't budge, was built to last, and you can feel that the moment you walk through the door.

That sense of being "solid" is something I've thought about a lot lately.

For over 35 years, I've been in the thick of it with people...leading, counseling, and just walking through life's seasons alongside them. I've watched people grow, I've watched them get stuck, and I've watched them finally find their footing. I've had to do my own work along the way, too.

And here's the one thing I know for sure after all of it...who we are matters a lot more than what we do. You can spend all day checking off a list, but if your intention isn't there, you're just spinning your wheels.

Fear is not the opposite of confidence. It is the companion to it. And the women who understand that, really understand it, are the ones who change everything around them.

The Builder in You

In my experience, there is a specific word for the kind of person who gets this. The kind of person who shows up with intention, who plays the long game, who isn't interested in shortcuts or going through the motions.

You are a Builder.

Not a title. Not a role. A way of being.

A Builder is someone who has vision...you know what needs to happen and you have the grit to see it through. A Builder is in it for the long haul, you aren't looking for a quick fix, you want something that actually stands the test of time. A Builder focuses on intention, you know that how you show up matters infinitely more than how busy you appear. A Builder is resilient, you know that anything worth building involves setbacks, and you keep going anyway because the work is worth it. And a Builder doesn't get caught up in checking boxes, you focus on ways of being rather than going through the motions.

Here's the honest truth though, most people don't think they can be a Builder. Not because they lack the vision or the grit, but because they're scared. And somewhere along the way, they decided that fear meant they weren't ready, weren't qualified, weren't enough.

But fear doesn't mean any of that. Fear and confidence are actually a pair...you don't get one without the other. The question has never been whether you feel afraid. The question is what you do with it.

What Happens When You Stop Fighting Fear

Most of us, when fear shows up, do one of two things. We fight it, we white-knuckle our way through, trying to push it down and power past it. Or we hide from it, we stay busy, stay distracted, stay safely inside the edges of what feels comfortable and known.

Both of those responses have the same result. The fear doesn't go anywhere. It just goes underground, where it quietly runs the show from behind the scenes. 💛

But when you allow fear to simply be there...when you let it flow in and out without trying to fight it or fix it or hide it...something shifts. You find your footing. You stop holding your breath. You stop waiting to feel ready and start moving anyway, fear and all.

That is where real confidence is born. Not in the absence of fear, but in the decision to keep going while it's present. It isn't about being fearless, it's about being honest. With yourself, with the people you lead, with the life you are trying to build.

The Science of Fear Reappraised

The science actually caught up with what many of us have known intuitively for years.

Harvard research on anxiety and performance found something remarkable: the physical sensation of fear and the physical sensation of excitement are almost identical in the body. The racing heart, the heightened alertness, the energy moving through your system...your body can't actually tell the difference between the two. The only thing that separates fear from excitement is the story you tell yourself about what you're feeling.

When you tell yourself "I am afraid," your nervous system braces for threat. Your thinking narrows and your capacity to lead shrinks with it.

But when you allow that same energy to simply...exist...when you stop labeling it as something to overcome and start treating it as information, as fuel, your nervous system stays online. Your brain stays clear. You lead from a grounded, present place instead of a stressed and scattered one. 🌿

And here's the piece that I find most profound of all...when you stop hiding, people feel it. They can't always name what they're sensing, but they know when someone is being real with them. And that realness, that willingness to show up without the armor, is what makes trust possible. It is what makes genuine leadership possible.

You cannot lead from behind a mask. You can manage from there, maybe, but you cannot truly lead.

Soul-To-Soul: The Light You Bring

This is what separates the people who talk about change from the people who actually live it. It isn't a strategy or a system...it's a soul-to-soul connection. It's being so secure in who you are, so rooted in your own foundation, that you can light the way for others without needing them to validate the path you're on.

For me, personally, this is where my faith lives. Bringing the light of Jesus into what I do isn't about being perfect or having all the answers, it's about being honest. It's about showing up as a real, whole, still-growing human being and trusting that the light moves through that, not despite it. That authenticity, that willingness to be seen, is itself an act of faith. 🙏

And I want to ask you, what is your source of light?

Because this soul-to-soul way of leading that I'm describing isn't exclusive to any one faith tradition or spiritual background. Some of you will find it in God, in prayer, in scripture. Some of you will find it in nature, in community, in the quiet practice of simply becoming more of who you already are. Some of you are still finding the language for it, and that search itself is sacred.

Whatever your source, lead from there. Build from there. Let that be the foundation that doesn't budge, the thing in you that people feel the moment you walk through the door.

Your Moment of Reflection

I want to ask you something, and I want you to really sit with it before you answer.

Where are you currently hiding because you're afraid?

Not hiding from other people necessarily, but hiding from yourself. Hiding behind your busyness, your to-do list, your perfectly curated version of "I've got it together." Where is all of that motion getting in the way of who you are actually meant to be?

Because the hiding that feels like protection...it's actually the thing that's keeping you stuck. It's keeping you from the conversations you know you need to have, the decisions you know you need to make, the version of yourself that is already there, already whole, just waiting for you to stop holding your breath.

There is nothing wrong with you. The fear you feel isn't evidence of weakness...it's evidence that something matters to you.

Your Challenge This Week

Identify one place where you have been holding back. One conversation you've been avoiding, one decision you've been circling, one area of your life where fear has been quietly calling the shots while you've been pretending not to notice.

And then...move into that space. Not by ignoring the fear or trying to push past it. Just by letting it be there while you do what needs to be done anyway. Fear and all. Breath and all. Imperfect and all.

That is what a Builder does. Not because they aren't scared...but because they know the work is worth it. ✨

I would love to hear how it goes. Drop it in the comments below, because I promise you, you are not the only one navigating this, and your honesty might be exactly the thing someone else needs to hear today.
